Use a High Megapixel Camera

When you're taking the pictures for your website, you need to recognize that people are going to judge you immediately on the quality. In order to make these pictures as high quality as possible, you will need to use a higher megapixel camera. Anything that's 5.0 or higher is generally a good choice, though you might want to aim for 10.0 if your products have fine details that you want to highlight. If you don't want to buy a camera of this quality, you will want to rent one or possibly borrow one from a friend until you are able to afford one on your own. But the prices are going down, so they're much more cost effective than they used to be.

Use a Professional Photographer

Of course, you might also want to hire a professional to handle the job in order to save yourself the trouble and the equipment costs. While this is an expensive investment, it is also going to ensure that you have the best pictures you can on your site. Talk to photographers that have photographed products for websites before and then look at their portfolios to see whether you like the way other photos have turned out. It can help for you to realize that initially, this will be an expensive endeavor. But since you probably aren't introducing new items all the time, you won't have to spend as much as time goes on.

Allow for Image Zoom

On many websites these days, you can click on the photos and see a larger image in a new window. This helps customers see clearly what the details of the item look like without interrupting their shopping experience. It will help you tremendously if you set up your website to do this as well. Even if you have the website open to a new page with the larger picture, it lets the customer get a better look. In addition, you will want to have multiple pictures of each item on your site so that the customer can see all of the different views.

Try Different Backgrounds

If you've been on other websites, you've noticed that these sites use different backgrounds, depending on the items being sold. You can take advantage of this too. As a rule, when you are selling brightly colored items, you might want to choose a white background, while muted colors tend to do better with brighter backgrounds. You might also want to put your products into a larger setting (i.e. if you sell home furnishings, you can have a picture of all of your items decorating one room).

Just as you look for produce that looks good in the grocery store, your website needs to show the best pictures of your items for sale. Take nice photographs that show the various angles of the item as well as the details they will want to see. Be sure to update your photos ever six months or so if you can and look for the results in your increasing profits.
